Wellington, FL – Wellington, Florida – Margie Engle of Wellington, FL, claimed the Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award on Sunday, March 7, during week eight of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
Engle accumulated the most points of all female competitors in the $37,000 CSIO4* Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 8 on Thursday, March 4, and the $214,000 CSIO4* Grand Prix held Sunday, March 7. Aboard Dicas, a 12-year-old Rheinlander gelding (Diarado x Cassini I) owned by Storm Ridge Capital, LLC, Show Horses, Inc., and Gladewinds Partners, Inc, Engle jumped clear and placed eighth in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup before jumping to fourth in the Grand Prix on a double-clear effort. “I’m very grateful to Martha for presenting this award,” Engle said. “I think it’s great that she acknowledges women in the sport in which men and women compete equally. It’s such a nice award to have; it gives us a little extra incentive.”
Jolicoeur, accompanied by her husband, Dr. Stephen Norton, presented Engle with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd. in recognition of her title.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the way he’s going,” the U.S. Olympic rider said of Dicas. “He’s really trying hard. He’s had to step up because I’ve given Royce time off since he’s a bit older. I’m so happy with how he’s been jumping this season, and he’s really getting into a rhythm now.” A sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF, 2021 marks Jolicoeur’s 11th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. She began presenting the award in 2010 as a way of recognizing female accomplishments in an Olympic sport where men and women compete as equals. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
